Email security software in 2026 protects businesses against phishing, ransomware, business email compromise, and AI-powered cyber threats. The global market is valued at USD 5.89 billion and is projected to reach USD 10.64 billion by 2031. Explore 112 key statistics covering market growth, cybersecurity losses, cloud adoption, and emerging email protection trends.

Email security has become one of the most critical components of modern cybersecurity as businesses face increasingly sophisticated phishing attacks, business email compromise (BEC), ransomware, account takeove`rs, and AI-generated cyber threats. With billions of malicious emails circulating globally, organizations are investing heavily in advanced email security software to protect sensitive information, safeguard employee communications, prevent financial fraud, and maintain regulatory compliance.

The global email security software market is experiencing significant growth in 2026. According to Mordor Intelligence, the market is valued at approximately USD 5.89 billion in 2026 and is projected to reach USD 10.64 billion by 2031, representing a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 12.57%. Meanwhile, MarkNtel Advisors estimates the market at USD 8.1 billion in 2026, with expectations of reaching USD 16.19 billion by 2032. Although market estimates differ depending on research methodologies and product classifications, these forecasts highlight the growing importance of email protection solutions across businesses of all sizes.

The scale of email-based cyber threats further reinforces this demand. Microsoft’s threat intelligence data indicates that approximately 8.3 billion email phishing threats were detected during the first quarter of 2026, with 78% involving malicious links. Barracuda’s analysis of more than 3.1 billion emails in January 2026 also found that approximately one-third were malicious or unwanted spam. These findings demonstrate why traditional spam filters are increasingly insufficient against modern cyberattacks involving credential theft, malicious attachments, QR code phishing, and sophisticated social engineering.

Financial losses associated with email-related cybercrime are equally concerning. The FBI’s 2025 Internet Crime Report recorded approximately USD 3.05 billion in business email compromise losses, while phishing and spoofing generated more than 191,000 complaints. IBM’s Cost of a Data Breach Report 2025 found that phishing-related breaches cost organizations an average of USD 4.8 million, emphasizing the financial consequences of inadequate email security measures.

Artificial intelligence is also transforming the email threat landscape. Cybercriminals are increasingly leveraging generative AI to create convincing phishing messages, impersonate executives, automate fraudulent communications, and evade conventional detection systems. At the same time, email security vendors are incorporating AI-powered threat detection, behavioral analytics, automated incident response, and real-time URL analysis to identify suspicious activity before it results in a security breach.

Another major trend shaping the email security software industry in 2026 is the growing adoption of cloud-based protection and email authentication technologies. Cloud deployment accounted for approximately 59.1% of email security market revenue in 2025, while integrated cloud email security solutions are projected to grow at a CAGR of 21.25%. Furthermore, EasyDMARC reports that 52.1% of the top 1.8 million domains have valid DMARC configurations in 2026, although fewer than one-quarter enforce quarantine or rejection policies. This highlights the continuing gap between email security adoption and effective implementation.

As organizations increasingly rely on Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, cloud collaboration platforms, and distributed workforces, demand for comprehensive email security solutions is expected to remain strong. Businesses are prioritizing capabilities such as advanced phishing protection, business email compromise detection, email encryption, data loss prevention, malware scanning, automated threat remediation, and regulatory compliance management.

Top 112 Email Security Software Statistics, Data & Trends in 2026

A. Market size and growth

1. The email security software market is worth USD 5.89 billion in 2026 (Mordor Intelligence). This is one of the more conservative 2026 estimates, so treat it as a floor when sizing the opportunity.
2. Mordor puts 2025 at USD 5.23 billion. The 2026 figure implies roughly 12.6% growth in one year, solid but not explosive for security software.
3. Mordor projects USD 10.64 billion by 2031, a 12.57% CAGR for 2026–2031. Steady double-digit growth supports long-term email security software investment.
4. MarkNtel Advisors values the market at USD 8.1 billion in 2026, up from USD 7.27 billion in 2025. This is the highest estimate here, which shows how much the answer depends on what counts as “email security.”
5. MarkNtel forecasts USD 16.19 billion by 2032 at a 12.23% CAGR (2026–2032). Even this bullish view assumes growth in line with Mordor’s, so analysts disagree on size more than on direction.
6. Fortune Business Insights values the market at USD 5.46 billion in 2025 and USD 6.06 billion in 2026, reaching USD 14.44 billion by 2034 (11.5% CAGR). A mid-range view that lands between Mordor and MarkNtel.
7. Straits Research estimates USD 5.94 billion in 2026 and USD 14.82 billion by 2034 (12.10% CAGR). It sits close to Mordor’s 2026 figure but projects a longer, steeper climb.
8. Knowledge Sourcing Intelligence projects growth from USD 6.086 billion in 2025 to USD 11.987 billion in 2031 (11.96% CAGR). Four of the five analysts that publish growth rates land at roughly 12%.
9. MarkNtel’s 2026 estimate is about 37% higher than Mordor’s. Buyers and publishers should always name the analyst firm when quoting a market size.
10. Mordor’s own benchmark table lists other published 2025 estimates of USD 5.17 billion, USD 7.39 billion, and one USD 18.5 billion (2024) figure. The wide spread comes mainly from whether encryption, add-ons and consumer tools are counted.
11. North America held 41.05% of email security revenue in 2025 (Mordor). The region leads on vendor density and compliance pressure.
12. MarkNtel puts North America at about 43% of the 2026 market. Two independent analysts agree the region holds roughly two-fifths of spend.
13. Asia-Pacific is the fastest-growing region at a 14.28% CAGR through 2031 (Mordor). Cloud-first SMEs skipping legacy gateways drive this faster growth.
14. Fortune Business Insights sizes Asia-Pacific at USD 1.31 billion in 2025. At that size it is already a major region, not just a growth story.
15. India’s email security market reached USD 0.34 billion in 2025, against China’s USD 0.39 billion and Japan’s USD 0.25 billion (Fortune Business Insights). India is a near peer to China in this segment, which matters for vendors targeting Capterra India audiences.
16. Solutions held 69.35% of revenue in 2025, while services are growing faster at a 15.02% CAGR (Mordor). Software still dominates, though outsourced security operations are gaining ground.
17. MarkNtel says the software component accounts for about 68% of the 2026 market. The two analysts’ views of the software-versus-services split are close.
18. Cloud deployment captured 59.10% of the market in 2025 and is growing at a 16.95% CAGR (Mordor). The shift to cloud email security software is now the default path for new buyers.
19. Fortune Business Insights lists cloud at 55.84% share in 2026, in an earlier edition of its report. Cloud leads under both analysts’ definitions, though the exact share varies.
20. Large enterprises generated 60.55% of 2025 revenue, while SMEs are growing at an 18.05% CAGR (Mordor). SMEs are the main growth story in email security software.
21. Secure Email Gateways held 36.95% share in 2025, while Integrated Cloud Email Security (ICES) is growing at a 21.25% CAGR (Mordor). Legacy gateways are not disappearing, but API-based tools are taking new demand.
22. MarkNtel puts the Secure Email Gateway share at about 38% in 2026. Gateways remain the single largest architecture by share despite the shift toward API-based tools.
23. BFSI is the largest vertical with 27.35% share, while healthcare is the fastest-growing at a 16.62% CAGR (Mordor). Regulated industries lead adoption because compliance rules require encryption and filtering.
24. The EU’s NIS2 Directive covers roughly 30,000 German entities versus about 2,000 under NIS1 (Mordor). A fifteen-fold expansion in scope is a concrete reason European firms are buying email security software.
25. Mordor rates rising phishing and BEC incidents as the biggest growth driver, adding about 3.2 percentage points to the CAGR forecast. Threat volume, not regulation alone, is the main demand engine.
26. High implementation and maintenance cost is the largest restraint, subtracting about 2.1 points from the CAGR (Mordor). Pricing and total cost of ownership remain the main barrier, especially for small firms.
27. Mordor reports the average BEC attack cost USD 35,000 in 2024. The figure is well below FBI and APWG-reported averages elsewhere in this list, so definitions differ by source.
28. Mordor cites an average of 1,636 attempted cyberattacks per week per organization. Constant attempt volume explains why automated email filtering is now baseline.
29. About 94% of Asia-Pacific SMEs already use cloud SaaS productivity suites (Mordor). That cloud base makes API-level email protection an easy fit for the region’s small firms.
30. Mordor says more than half of Asia-Pacific SMEs reported a cyber incident in 2024. Experience of incidents, not just awareness, is pushing SMEs beyond basic spam filters.
31. Mordor values Cisco’s purchase of Splunk at USD 28 billion. Platform consolidation is changing how email security software gets bought and bundled.
32. Proofpoint’s Hornetsecurity acquisition is reported at USD 1 billion by Mordor and USD 1.8 billion by MarkNtel. Reports conflict, so check the primary announcement before quoting a price.
33. AegisAI raised USD 36 million in July 2026 and Ocean raised USD 28 million in May 2026 for AI email security agents (Straits Research). Venture funding is flowing to autonomous-agent approaches, though they are still unproven at scale.
34. The business email compromise protection market is valued at USD 2.10 billion in 2025 and USD 2.58 billion in 2026, forecast to reach USD 13.30 billion by 2034 (22.74% CAGR; Fortune Business Insights). If accurate, BEC-specific tooling is growing about twice as fast as email security software overall.
35. Fortune Business Insights credits Proofpoint with about 19% and Mimecast about 16% of the BEC market. Two vendors hold about a third of this segment, so buyers still have meaningful choice beyond them.

B. Microsoft Defender data, Q1 2026

36. Microsoft detected about 8.3 billion email phishing threats in Q1 2026, falling from 2.9 billion in January to 2.6 billion in March. Volumes are enormous but not rising every month, so quarterly trends matter more than single headlines.
37. 78% of email threats in Q1 2026 were link-based. URL scanning and time-of-click protection are essential features in any email security software shortlist.
38. Malicious payloads were 19% of attacks in January, then 13% in February and March. Hosted phishing pages are replacing attachments as the preferred delivery route.
39. QR code phishing grew from 7.6 million attacks in January to 18.7 million in March, a 146% rise. Quishing was the fastest-growing vector in the quarter, so image-based QR scanning is a worthwhile buying criterion.
40. PDF attachments carried 65% of QR phishing in January and 70% in March. Email security software that does not inspect PDF contents for QR codes leaves a gap.
41. QR codes embedded directly in email bodies surged 336% in March but are only 5% of volume. A small share, but the jump shows attackers testing ways around attachment scanning.
42. CAPTCHA-gated phishing rose 125% in March to 11.9 million attacks, the highest in a year. Fake verification pages delay automated scanners, so sandboxing needs to handle interactive gates.
43. Tycoon2FA-linked email fell 15% in March after a Microsoft-led disruption. Takedowns help, but Microsoft notes the platform adapted its hosting and domains within weeks.
44. Tycoon2FA’s share of CAPTCHA-gated phishing sites fell from over three-quarters at the end of 2025 to 41% in March. The technique is spreading across more kits, so defenses should target the tactic rather than one tool.
45. Credential phishing made up 89% of payload-based attacks in January, 95% in February and 94% in March. Stealing logins, not delivering malware, is the dominant goal of email attacks.
46. Traditional malware delivery was just 5–6% of payloads by the end of Q1. Malware filtering matters, but identity protection deserves at least equal weight.
47. HTML attachments were 37% of payloads in January, and PDFs reached 29% in March. Attachment mix changes month to month, so static file-type rules age quickly.
48. Microsoft counted about 10.7 million BEC attacks in Q1 2026. BEC is a high-volume, low-effort threat at this scale, not only a targeted one.
49. Generic outreach such as “Are you at your desk?” made up 82–84% of initial BEC contact, and explicit financial requests only 9–10%. Detection that looks only for payment keywords will miss the rapport-building first message.
50. Payroll update requests were 4.2% of initial BEC emails and gift card requests 2.2% in Q1 2026. Specific pretexts are a small slice, but they track seasonal patterns such as tax season.
51. A three-day February 2026 campaign sent over 1.2 million messages to more than 53,000 organizations in 23 countries. Single campaigns can reach tens of thousands of organizations in days, so shared threat intelligence matters.
52. A March 17 HTML campaign hit more than 179,000 organizations in 43 countries with 1.5 million messages. It accounted for about 7% of all malicious HTML attachments that month, which shows how concentrated attacks can be.

C. Barracuda 2026 Email Threats Report

53. Barracuda analysed more than 3.1 billion emails from January 2026, and one in three was malicious or unwanted spam. This is telemetry from the vendor’s own customers, so it shows scale but not the experience of every mailbox.
54. Phishing accounts for 48% of malicious email activity. It is the largest single category, which supports prioritizing anti-phishing features in email security software.
55. 34% of companies experience at least one account takeover incident every month. Detecting compromised accounts after delivery matters as much as blocking inbound mail.
56. 70% of malicious PDFs contain QR codes leading to phishing sites. This lines up with Microsoft’s finding that PDFs are the leading QR delivery method.
57. 90% of high-volume phishing campaigns used phishing-as-a-service kits. Commodity kits make advanced attacks accessible to low-skill criminals.

D. APWG phishing activity

58. APWG recorded 971,181 phishing attacks in Q1 2026, up 13.8% from 853,244 in Q4 2025. Reported attack counts are rising again after a late-2025 dip.
59. Q2 2026 reached 1,069,681 attacks, a 10.1% rise on Q1. Two straight quarters of growth show phishing pressure has not eased.
60. Telecom was 33% of phishing attacks in Q1 2026, up from 5.9% in Q3 2025, then fell to 4.2% in Q2. Sector targeting can swing quickly, so industry averages are a weak guide to individual risk.
61. SaaS and webmail was 29.1% of attacks in Q2 2026, up from 20% in Q1. Attackers keep going after the logins that unlock email and cloud accounts.
62. APWG logged 892,494 attacks in Q3 2025, with SaaS/Webmail the top sector at 21.2%. The long-run pattern is persistent volume near or below one million per quarter.
63. Fortra saw wire-transfer BEC attacks fall 25% in Q1 2026, with the average demand at USD 42,663. The average demand fell 15% from USD 50,297 the previous quarter, which shows BEC activity is uneven.

E. Verizon 2026 DBIR

64. Vulnerability exploitation led initial access at 31% of breaches, ahead of credential abuse at 13%. Email is no longer the leading entry point, so email security software should be one layer of several.
65. Phishing was the initial access vector in 16% of breaches. It is smaller than exploitation but still a large, well-defined attack surface.
66. Pretexting was tracked separately for the first time and reached 6% of initial access. Verizon notes this reclassified some cases from credential abuse, so year-on-year comparisons need care.
67. The human element was involved in 62% of breaches, up from 60%. Technical filters reduce, but do not remove, reliance on user behavior.
68. Ransomware appeared in 48% of breaches, up from 44%. Email remains a common ransomware route, which makes it relevant to payload and link protection.
69. 69% of ransomware victims did not pay. Fewer payments suggest improving resilience, though attacks themselves continue to rise.
70. 96% of ransomware victims with known size were SMBs. Small businesses are the main victims, yet they have the least budget for enterprise-grade email security.
71. 50% of ransomware victims had a credential or infostealer event in the 95 days before the attack. Credential theft, often started by phishing, is a measurable early warning.
72. Phishing accounted for 44% of LLM-assisted initial access attempts, ahead of exploitation at 32% and credential abuse at 21%. Attackers use AI most for phishing, which supports AI-aware detection in email tools.
73. Phone-based phishing simulations had a median click rate of 2%, against 1.4% for email simulations. Voice and SMS lures are harder to resist, which email security alone cannot address.

F. IBM Cost of a Data Breach 2025

74. The global average breach cost fell 9% to USD 4.44 million. It was the first decline in five years, which suggests faster detection helps.
75. The US average rose 9% to a record USD 10.22 million. Regulatory and detection costs push US losses well above the global figure.
76. Phishing was the most common initial attack vector at 16% of breaches, with an average cost of USD 4.8 million. That makes it both frequent and expensive, a strong cost case for email security software.
77. Phishing-initiated breaches took about 254 days to identify and contain. Slow detection is a reason to value post-delivery remediation features.
78. Across all breaches, the average lifecycle fell to 241 days. The overall improvement is positive but still leaves months of attacker access.
79. Malicious insider attacks cost USD 4.92 million, supply-chain compromise USD 4.91 million, and compromised credentials USD 4.67 million. The cheapest of these is still within a few percent of phishing’s USD 4.8 million.
80. Supply-chain compromise was the second most frequent vector at 15%. Trusted-vendor email fraud blends into this category, so vendor-impersonation detection matters.
81. Healthcare had the highest sector cost at USD 7.42 million and a 279-day lifecycle. It remains the costliest industry even though the figure is down from 2024.
82. 16% of breaches involved attackers using AI, most often for phishing (37%) or deepfakes (35%). AI use is now documented in real breach data, not just forecasts.
83. IBM estimates generative AI cuts the time to craft a convincing phishing email from 16 hours to 5 minutes. That is a vendor-reported estimate, but it explains the rise in polished lures.
84. 20% of organizations had breaches involving shadow AI, adding about USD 670,000 to costs. Unsanctioned AI tools create data paths that email controls may not see.
85. 86% of breached organizations reported operational disruption. The damage goes beyond data loss to downtime.
86. Only 40% of ransomware victims contacted law enforcement, down from 52%. Under-reporting means official statistics likely understate email-borne extortion.
87. 13% of organizations reported a breach involving an AI model or application. AI itself is becoming an attack surface alongside the email channel.

G. FBI IC3 2025 Internet Crime Report

88. The FBI recorded 1,008,597 complaints and USD 20.877 billion in reported losses in 2025, up about 26% from USD 16.6 billion. This is the first year above USD 20 billion, and most of the increase came from scams, not email crime.
89. BEC losses were USD 3.047 billion from 24,768 complaints in 2025. The figure is up from USD 2.77 billion and 21,442 complaints in 2024, so BEC is still growing.
90. Phishing and spoofing was the most reported crime type with 191,561 complaints. It narrowly fell from 193,407 in 2024 but remains the most common complaint.
91. Reported phishing losses rose from USD 70 million to USD 215.8 million, a 208% increase. Complaint counts held steady, so each successful attack is costing more.
92. BEC, phishing and spoofing together made up 216,329 complaints and over USD 3 billion in losses. Email-driven fraud is a large, measurable share of reported cybercrime.
93. AI appeared as a complaint descriptor for the first time: 22,364 complaints and USD 893.3 million in losses. The category overlaps with others, so it should not be added to the headline total.
94. The FBI’s Recovery Asset Team froze USD 679 million across 3,900 incidents, a 58% success rate. Reporting quickly after a wire fraud measurably improves recovery odds.
95. Investment fraud reached about USD 8.65 billion, roughly 41% of total losses. Email-borne BEC ranks second by value, so it is large but not the largest category.
96. IC3 logged 3,611 ransomware complaints and more than USD 32 million in reported losses, with 63 new variants. These figures are far below true ransomware costs because most victims never report.
97. The 2025 AFP survey found 63% of treasury practitioners cited BEC as the top avenue for payment fraud attempts. Finance teams see BEC as their main fraud channel.

H. DMARC and email authentication (EasyDMARC)

98. 937,931 of the top 1.8 million domains (52.1%) have valid DMARC in 2026, up from 47.7% in 2025. Adoption now covers a majority of tracked domains.
99. Valid DMARC domains grew from 523,921 in 2023 to 858,782 in 2025 and 937,931 in 2026. Growth is steady, with most of the gain coming before 2025.
100. 411,935 domains use enforcement policies (quarantine or reject), up from 233,249 in 2023. Enforcement is rising but still covers under a quarter of tracked domains.
101. 29.2% of the top 1.8 million domains use p=none, and 22.9% use enforcement. More domains monitor than block, so spoofing protection is weaker than adoption suggests.
102. Only 8.9% of domains combine p=reject with aggregate reporting, about 159,691 domains. Full DMARC protection with visibility remains rare.
103. 475 of the Fortune 500 (95%) have DMARC, and over 80% enforce it. Large firms are well ahead, so the gap is among smaller businesses.
104. More than 553,000 domains are configured for aggregate (RUA) reporting. Reporting is a prerequisite for safe enforcement, and uptake is growing.
105. DmarcDkim.com found only 10.7% of 859,048 monitored domains had full p=reject in February 2026. A separate dataset reaches a similar conclusion, which supports the claim that enforcement lags.
106. Valimail reports that 75–80% of domains with DMARC records never leave p=none. Publishing a record is not the same as being protected, which is worth stating clearly in buyer guidance.

I. AI and phishing trends (Hoxhunt and others)

107. AI-generated phishing was under 5% of reported attacks for the first 11 months of 2025, then hit 56% in December 2025 (14x) and 40% in January 2026. The jump is striking, but it reflects emails that got past filters and were reported by users, not all email.
108. 43% of AI-generated phishing emails use malicious links. Link analysis stays central even as message text gets harder to spot.
109. Hoxhunt reports a 50-fold increase in malicious SVG attachments. Image-format files are an overlooked attachment type for filters.
110. Callback phishing campaigns rose 500% in Q4 2025 (VIPRE, cited by Hoxhunt). Phone-call lures move the attack out of the inbox, where email controls cannot follow.
111. .ics calendar invite files had a 24% failure rate across more than 50 million simulations, among the highest of any attachment type. Calendar invites are trusted by default, so they deserve scrutiny.
112. Free-product and reward offers appeared in 18.6% of AI-generated malicious emails, the most common theme. The top theme is consumer-style bait, not corporate impersonation.

Conclusion

The latest 112 email security software statistics, data, and trends in 2026 highlight an increasingly complex cybersecurity landscape where sophisticated phishing attacks, business email compromise (BEC), artificial intelligence, and evolving regulatory requirements are reshaping how organizations protect their digital communications.
