Well, the STAR method is an acronym that stands for situation, task, action, and result. Here, we’ll explain how to apply it to answer behavioral interview questions:

1. S stands for SITUATION

Situations stand for the background of the problem the interviewer asked you. It is the situation in which you faced in relation to the problem asked. Make sure you ask yourself what the exact problem that caused the situation that was being asked by the interviewer. Try to be as specific as possible.

2. T stands for TASK

Task is the goal that the candidate attempted to achieve in that situation. Looking at the question, you need to determine the goal and reply with the specific goals you intended to achieve in that situation. Also, you can explain the specific tasks you have to do in order to achieve the goals you explained.

3. A stand for ACTION

After discovering the goals you wanted to achieve in that situation, the next thing is to list the specific action you took to achieve those goals. Not only do you need to know the actions you took, but you also need to know the reasons for the actions. Any action the candidate lists out must focus solely on the role you played individually.

In other words, you have to explain the specific actions you took in order to solve the problem that happened in the “situation” phase.

4. R stands for RESULT

The interviewer and interviewee will be concerned with the results of the action you took. Was the goal you listed above achieved?

In the “result” section, it is not important if all your results are positive. The important part is how you can justify the action you took and the lessons you learned from the result, whether it is a success or a failure. Make sure you take credit for all the things you accomplished and highlight the positives more than the negative.

Example of Using STAR Method for Behavioral Interview

Let’s say the interviewer asked a question like…

What was the most difficult problem you have been asked to solve?

Using the STAR method, you can answer:

SITUATION: In 2015, while working with PZ Cussons. My team’s revenue was down by 5% in the last quarter of the fiscal year.

TASK: We were instructed to increase our revenue by 10% before the year runs out.

ACTION:  I started a process of completely overhauling the company’s ineffective production process and worked with my teammates to develop a new and more effective production process.

RESULT: After implementing these actions, in a few months, our revenue was up 14%, thanks to the new approach we implemented, which improved productivity, thereby increasing revenue.

But, in reality, most behavioral interview questions are more complex than the example above.

So, it is advisable for you to try to write out your answers and practice in answering such questions. Thus, you’ll be more confident in answering those behavioral questions.

There are several common complex behavioral interview questions that you can practice:

1. Describe a situation where you had to make an unpopular decision and how you implemented it!

2. Describe how you worked effectively under pressure!

3. Give an example of a goal you achieved and how you did it!

4. Tell me about the worst manager you ever had and how to manage his or her troubles!

5. Suppose a coworker has an annoying attitude that reduces the quality of your work. How would you resolve such a situation?

Can you describe your daily life?

On a typical day, I conduct strategic coordination internally such as discussing technical matters (technical meetings), finances, negotiating with clients, technical meetings with external (3rd party), and clients. Sometimes I also go into technical work (if needed).

Who are some of your big clients?

I have been in the IT world since 1989, for me, no client is a bigger one. All of my clients are the same because we needed them too. The challenges are also different. It’s just that I’m more satisfied if they are satisfied with what we can provide. They are all big, and they are all who raised me and my company. You can check them on our website here.

How did you get them to become your client?

I prefer to get a client from a client because then I can measure the satisfaction of the client who referred us to the client. I’m not saying that I do not need marketing, marketing is still needed to find new clients or what I usually call as “New Business” and monitoring old clients and I think this is what marketing friends should do.

What has been your greatest success in your career and why?

Same as mentioned before, no achievement is the bigger one. All of that is the result of teamwork. For me, maybe this is normal because I am a person who is never satisfied with what I have done. Not because I am not grateful, but indeed I always demand improvement on an output.

What are some difficult moments/challenges in running this company/business?

Currently (This outbreak) is the most difficult moment in my life.

What is your favorite career/business failure (and what did you learn from it)?

Same as always, no failure is the worst and/or my favorite. Everybody has had some bad and good experiences in their life. For me, I treat all of them to improve what I have now for my future.

Who has had the biggest influence and motivation on your career?

It has always been God and Family, namely my wife and two children. It is for their support and prayers that I can be who i am today.

What is the biggest sacrifice you have to make to start your business?

The most expensive sacrifices that I had to make were time, with my family for example. As much as possible I always set this (my business) aside for my needs to relax and refresh (for example weekends, school holidays, Christmas, etc). I also spend some family time every day after work.

Lastly, what are some interview tips you would give to prospective candidates coming for your interview?

Tough and endurance are required at the moment. I will give them a challenge, I don’t care about the result. What I want to see is how long they will take the challenge. Sometimes I also want to know how the process.

Bởi vì đây là một cơ hội để bạn thể hiện chính mình, chứng minh cho nhà tuyển dụng thấy bạn là người thích hợp cho vị trí họ đang cần. Do đó, sự chuẩn bị chu đáo chứng tỏ việc bạn quan tâm đến công việc này như thế nào đồng thời để lại ấn tượng trong mắt nhà tuyển dụng.

Dưới đây là những tips giúp cho cuộc phỏng vấn của bạn hiệu quả hơn.

𝗧𝗶𝗽 𝟭: Chuẩn bị bài “Elevator Pitch”

‘Elevator Pitch’ là 1 bài nói được chuẩn bị trước một cách cẩn thận để nhấn mạnh các ưu điểm và thông tin cơ bản của bạn. Người phỏng vấn sẽ có khuynh hướng đặt câu hỏi mở: “Bạn giới thiệu đôi nét về bản thân mình được không?”. Lúc này, bạn sẽ làm chủ cuộc phỏng vấn của mình với nhà tuyển dụng.

Mục tiêu của nhà tuyển dụng khi hỏi câu này là có thể tiếp xúc với

ứng viên một cách hiệu quả và có được cái nhìn toàn diện về ứng viên đó.

Bạn không thể liệt kê thông tin một cách máy móc bởi vì thông tin đã có hết trong CV, mà việc bạn cần làm là thể hiện tính cách & khả năng của mình trong một khoảng thời gian nhất định. Bạn phải nói thông tin liên quan, kỹ năng, kinh nghiệm công việc và trình bày nó một cách hấp dẫn. Vậy để giải quyết được những vấn đề trên thì bạn cần làm gì?

Giải pháp đưa ra chính là bạn nên kể một câu chuyện tại sao của bạn.

Vì sao bạn yêu thích công việc bạn đang chọn? Kinh nghiệm việc làm bạn đã làm trước đó? Bạn đã học được những gì thông qua những công việc kia ? Hoặc là điểm mạnh của bạn so với những người khác, thậm chí kể cả điểm yếu?

Sau đây là một ví dụ cho elevator pitch của mình:

“Tôi học khoa marketing tại đại học kinh tế Hồ Chí Minh. Với tính cách hoà đồng, sáng tạo thì tôi nghĩ lĩnh vực này phù hợp với tôi. Tôi tìm kiếm cơ hội của mình thông qua Jobsfresher. Với tư cách là internship mảng marketing, tôi đã giúp công ty tôi thực tập đạt được 12 khách hàng B2B lớn (tổng hợp đồng trị giá 408 triệu đồng) trong vòng 6 tháng. Tôi tin tưởng rằng khả năng tìm khác hàng, thương lượng và chốt giao dịch sẽ là một thứ không thể thiếu cho công ty của bạn. Nếu đến trước dịp tết 2020 mà doanh số của quý chưa tăng gấp đôi, tôi sẽ rời khỏi đây. “

Tip 2: Nghiên cứu và tìm hiểu công ty

Khi bạn là học sinh, các giáo viên nói “Làm bài tập về nhà”. Khi bạn đang làm việc, sếp của bạn yêu “Chuẩn bị cho buổi thuyết trình sản phẩm mới”. Lời khuyên “chuẩn bị trước cho sự thành công” cũng đã được lặp đi lặp lại rất nhiều. Nhưng một lý do tại sao nhắc lại vẫn quan trọng, đó là vì dù 1 điều cơ bản, các ứng viên luôn không nghiên cứu đủ sâu và hiệu quả. Việc thiếu nghiên cứu về công ty, yêu cầu của họ trong công việc hàng ngày, văn hóa công ty, kỳ vọng của họ về tính cách, kỳ vọng về lương, … có thể để cơ hội nhận việc mất đi ngay từ cuộc phỏng vấn đầu tiên.

Hiểu về công ty, thu thập cái nhìn sâu sắc cho công việc bạn quan tâm không chỉ là truy cập trang web của họ. Đây là bước thứ hai quan trọng sau khi hiểu được điểm mạnh và điểm yếu của chính bạn, vì vậy hãy làm bài tập về công ty của bạn theo các tips:

– Đọc kỹ các mô tả công việc. Chuẩn bị câu hỏi cho bất kỳ nhiệm vụ / yêu cầu nào bạn không hiểu để bạn có thể hỏi người phỏng vấn. Đặt câu hỏi tốt của riêng bạn trong cuộc phỏng vấn có thể tạo ra một sự khác biệt lớn.
– Tìm kiếm bất kỳ thông tin nào về tính cách văn hóa cty: trang web, blog công ty, trang facebook, các sự kiện xây dựng đội ngũ trong quá khứ, … Ghi chú về những gì bạn tìm thấy (họ có làm việc chăm chỉ, vui vẻ, hay nghiêm túc, …?)

– Tìm kiếm ý kiến của nhân viên cũ trên Glassdoor và LinkedIn
– Tiếp cận với một nhân viên hiện tại từ LinkedIn và rủ họ đi cafe. Bạn sẽ không bao giờ đến gần với những nội bộ của một công ty nếu chỉ đọc trên mạng.

Tip 3: Gửi mail cảm ơn

Nhiều ứng viên quên rằng nỗ lực giành được công việc chưa kết thúc sau buổi phỏng vấn. Gửi email cảm ơn sau cuộc phỏng vấn là một hành động quan trọng vì nó cho thấy bạn chưa từ bỏ và thực sự quan tâm đến vị trí công việc.

Khi gửi email cảm ơn người phỏng vấn bạn cũng nhắc họ về bản thân bạn lần thứ hai. Chú ý gửi email cảm ơn này trong vòng 24 giờ, để ấn tượng tốt và khi mà người phỏng vấn vẫn nhớ bạn.

Giữ email ngắn gọn và đề cập chi tiết trong cuộc trò chuyện với người phỏng vấn để họ biết rằng bạn đã chú ý kĩ. Có một vài lưu ý ngắn về:

– Tại sao bạn thực sự đam mê công việc
– Điểm mạnh, kỹ năng, kinh nghiệm có liên quan của bạn là gì – Tại sao bạn đặc biệt hơn các ứng cử viên khác

Phỏng vấn xin việc sẽ là 1 khó khăn lớn cho những người chỉ dựa vào CV. Những thành tựu, tên trường tốt trên giấy sẽ không giúp bạn thành công trong quá trình xin việc. Những gì các công ty sẽ thấy là khả năng của bạn được thể hiện qua cách trình bày về năng lực bản thân. Bạn hãy nên nhớ rằng, tiêu chí tuyển dụng không phải là tìm ra người xuất sắc nhất, mà là tìm ra người phù hợp với công việc nhất. Do đó, những tips trên hi vọng giúp ích được bạn trong việc tìm kiếm công việc yêu thích.
