<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In this section, we&#8217;ll explore these potential pitfalls and provide insights on how to avoid them, backed by data and real-world examples.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Mistake 1: Neglecting the Basics</strong></h3>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Not Having a Clear Focus</strong></h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Common Mistake</strong>: Failing to define a clear focus for your portfolio can lead to confusion among visitors about your expertise and niche.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Research shows that <a href="https://www.trajectorywebdesign.com/blog/website-revamp-guide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">39% of consumers will stop engaging with content if it&#8217;s unattractive or lacks a clear message</a>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Solution</strong>: Define your niche and target audience. Your portfolio should clearly communicate what kind of writing you specialize in and who your ideal clients or readers are.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>Example</em>: If you&#8217;re a content writer focusing on finance and your portfolio showcases various unrelated topics, potential clients may question your expertise. Instead, maintain a cohesive theme around financial writing.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Ignoring Website Usability</strong></h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Common Mistake</strong>: Overcomplicating your website&#8217;s design can deter visitors. A cluttered or confusing layout can lead to high bounce rates.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/15-essential-web-design-statistics-every-business-owner#:~:text=In%20fact%2C%20according%20to%20a,explore%20your%20products%20or%20services." target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">A study found that 94% of first impressions regarding website design are design-related</a>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Solution</strong>: Prioritize user-friendly design. Ensure intuitive navigation, clear headings, and responsive layouts. Your portfolio should be easy to navigate and visually appealing.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>Example</em>: If your portfolio website has a sleek and organized design, visitors are more likely to stay and explore your work, increasing the chances of engaging with your content.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Mistake 2: Neglecting SEO</strong></h3>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Disregarding Keyword Research</strong></h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Common Mistake</strong>: Many writers overlook keyword research, missing opportunities to rank higher on search engines and attract organic traffic.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://ahrefs.com/blog/seo-statistics/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">68% of all online experiences begin with a search engine</a>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Solution</strong>: Conduct thorough keyword research to identify relevant terms and phrases related to your niche. Incorporate these keywords strategically into your portfolio content.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>Example</em>: Suppose you&#8217;re a food blogger specializing in vegan recipes. By targeting keywords like &#8220;easy vegan recipes&#8221; or &#8220;plant-based cooking,&#8221; your portfolio is more likely to appear in search results for those queries.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Neglecting Metadata Optimization</strong></h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Common Mistake</strong>: Many writers forget to optimize their metadata, missing out on opportunities to improve click-through rates from search engine results.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Solution</strong>: <a href="https://blog.applabx.com/meta-descriptions-the-ultimate-guide-to-writing-compelling-meta-descriptions/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Craft compelling meta titles and descriptions</a> for each portfolio piece. These should accurately reflect the content and encourage users to click.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>Example</em>: A well-optimized meta description might include a brief summary of the portfolio piece, highlighting its value or uniqueness, thus attracting more clicks from search results.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Mistake 3: Ineffective Promotion</strong></h3>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Neglecting Social Media Engagement</strong></h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Common Mistake</strong>: Simply sharing your portfolio on social media without engaging with your audience can lead to missed opportunities for building a loyal following.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Solution</strong>: Interact with your social media followers by responding to comments, asking questions, and encouraging discussions related to your portfolio content.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>Example</em>: If a reader comments on your shared portfolio article with a question, responding promptly and providing a helpful answer can foster a positive relationship and keep them engaged.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Failing to Measure and Adjust</strong></h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Common Mistake</strong>: Neglecting to track the performance of your portfolio and promotional efforts can result in missed opportunities for improvement.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Solution</strong>: Implement analytics tools to monitor your portfolio&#8217;s traffic, user behavior, and engagement. Use these insights to refine your content and promotion strategies.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>Example</em>: If you notice that one of your portfolio pieces is receiving significantly more views and engagement, consider creating similar content to capitalize on its success.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Mistake 4: Overlooking Mobile Optimization</strong></h3>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Neglecting Mobile Users</strong></h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Common Mistake</strong>: Many writers forget to ensure that their portfolio websites are optimized for mobile devices. This oversight can alienate a significant portion of potential visitors.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>Example</em>: A mobile-optimized portfolio website with easy navigation and readable text on smaller screens is more likely to keep mobile users engaged.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Slow Loading Times</strong></h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Common Mistake</strong>: Slow-loading websites can frustrate visitors and increase bounce rates, negatively impacting your portfolio&#8217;s performance.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://blog.google/products/admanager/the-need-for-mobile-speed/#:~:text=3...&amp;text=Slow%20page%20load%20times%20are,than%203%20seconds%20to%20load&amp;text=One%20out%20of%20two%20people,in%20less%20than%202%20seconds&amp;text=46%25%20of%20people%20say%20that,the%20web%20on%20mobile%20devices" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">53% of mobile site visits are abandoned if pages take longer than 3 seconds to load</a>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>Example</em>: A portfolio website that loads quickly on both desktop and mobile devices provides a better user experience, increasing the likelihood of engagement.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Mistake 5: Neglecting Professionalism</strong></h3>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Lack of Proofreading</strong></h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Common Mistake</strong>: Submitting content with typos, grammatical errors, or poor formatting can undermine your credibility as a writer.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>Example</em>: A portfolio with impeccably written content demonstrates your attention to detail and professionalism, making it more appealing to potential clients or employers.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Neglecting Contact Information</strong></h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Common Mistake</strong>: Failing to provide clear contact information on your portfolio can deter potential clients or collaborators.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator"/>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Meet Justin.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="300" height="300" src="https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/justin-weyant-wordstream.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1114" srcset="https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/justin-weyant-wordstream.jpg 300w, https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/justin-weyant-wordstream-150x150.jpg 150w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Justin Weyant is kind of amazing. He just won WordStream&#8217;s Core Values Achievement Award, our monthly program where we recognize a single employee (out of almost 200!) who represents our company&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wordstream.com/blog/ws/2012/12/11/core-values">core values</a>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">How did we find him?</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Did he happen to notice a &#8220;Now Hiring&#8221; sign in our window on Huntington Ave. in Boston while he was walking by? Did we use a recruiter? Did he respond to our listing on a job site? Did we find him using LinkedIn?</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">No, no, no, and no.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">He saw one of my ads on Facebook and messaged me. Seriously.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">How the heck did that happen? Read on to find out how we found Justin – and how YOU can recruit top talent like Justin to your company for about $200&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wordstream.com/blog/ws/2017/05/31/how-to-advertise-on-facebook">using Facebook Ads</a>.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Where Do You Recruit Employees?</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">How are you recruiting new employees?</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="526" height="440" src="https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/facebook-recruiting-thatd-be-great.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1115" srcset="https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/facebook-recruiting-thatd-be-great.jpg 526w, https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/facebook-recruiting-thatd-be-great-300x251.jpg 300w, https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/facebook-recruiting-thatd-be-great-502x420.jpg 502w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 526px) 100vw, 526px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Are you using job recruiters? If so, you know their finder fees are ridiculously high. Typically it will cost you 20 percent of your new employee&#8217;s first year salary.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Isn&#8217;t there a cheaper route? Why can&#8217;t we just find employees through social media?</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When you think recruiting and social media, most people think of LinkedIn. Many companies believe this myth that you have to do all your recruiting on LinkedIn.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="400" height="400" src="https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/you-thought-wrong-fool.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1116" srcset="https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/you-thought-wrong-fool.jpg 400w, https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/you-thought-wrong-fool-300x300.jpg 300w, https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/you-thought-wrong-fool-150x150.jpg 150w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Honestly, LinkedIn is a site most people use only when they&#8217;re out of work and searching for a new job. So your search for employees on LinkedIn will actually end up excluding people who aren&#8217;t actively job-hunting.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Often the best employees already have jobs. Some of the greatest employees we’ve hired actually weren’t even looking to change jobs!</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Can You Recruit Employees on Facebook?</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Facebook is the platform where everyone spends the most time. More than a billion people log into Facebook every day.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You can encourage your employees to share job openings on their Facebook page. But this won&#8217;t accomplish much. Your&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wordstream.com/blog/ws/2016/07/20/facebook-newsfeed-algorithm">organic reach on Facebook</a>&nbsp;is limited to friends of your employees.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You need people who live near your office. You need people with certain skills.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The number of people who are actually qualified for any open job is low. It&#8217;s highly unlikely that your current employees will be connected with someone who is absolutely perfect for the job – and even if they are, that person could easily miss it in their news feed.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="310" height="310" src="https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/is-it-me-youre-recruiting-for.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1117" srcset="https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/is-it-me-youre-recruiting-for.jpg 310w, https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/is-it-me-youre-recruiting-for-300x300.jpg 300w, https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/is-it-me-youre-recruiting-for-150x150.jpg 150w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 310px) 100vw, 310px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you&#8217;re serious about adding top talent to your team (fast), you need to reach a bigger audience on Facebook. You need to use Facebook Ads.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Creating Your Facebook Recruiting Ad</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Any&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wordstream.com/blog/ws/2016/05/23/facebook-ad-examples">great Facebook Ad</a>&nbsp;needs great visuals. So my biggest goal was to make WordStream look cool to future employees.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I took some photos during a company party to help highlight our&nbsp;<a href="http://www.inc.com/larry-kim/how-leaders-can-build-or-destroy-your-startup-company-culture.html">culture</a>&nbsp;and show off a few of our people. In the ad copy, I said that WordStream was hiring for all departments, listed a few of our amazing perks, told people to message me if they were interested, and linked to our job page.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And then I&nbsp;<a href="https://www.facebook.com/ws.larrykim/posts/578680882273001">posted it to my wall</a>&nbsp;and boosted it with Facebook Ads:</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="508" height="691" src="https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/larry-kim-wordstream-recruiting-facebook-ad.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1118" srcset="https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/larry-kim-wordstream-recruiting-facebook-ad.jpg 508w, https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/larry-kim-wordstream-recruiting-facebook-ad-221x300.jpg 221w, https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/larry-kim-wordstream-recruiting-facebook-ad-309x420.jpg 309w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 508px) 100vw, 508px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is where the ad targeting comes in. People who have heard of you may not realize they&#8217;re in your key demographic and that you&#8217;re hiring.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Targeting Your Facebook Recruiting Ad</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://www.wordstream.com/blog/ws/2016/06/27/facebook-ad-targeting-options-infographic">Facebook&#8217;s ad targeting</a>&nbsp;is mind-blowing. You just have to know exactly who you&#8217;re looking for when you&#8217;re recruiting for new team members.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For most companies, location is critical. So you can do geographic targeting within a few miles of your office:</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="844" height="479" src="https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/facebook-recruiting-location.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1119" srcset="https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/facebook-recruiting-location.jpg 844w, https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/facebook-recruiting-location-300x170.jpg 300w, https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/facebook-recruiting-location-768x436.jpg 768w, https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/facebook-recruiting-location-696x395.jpg 696w, https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/facebook-recruiting-location-740x420.jpg 740w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 844px) 100vw, 844px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Demographics are another critical element of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wordstream.com/blog/ws/2018/05/15/facebook-dynamic-creative">Facebook</a>&nbsp;ad targeting.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">What age group are you targeting? If you want someone who is entry-level, you&#8217;ll want to target a younger crowd (early to mid-20s).</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In addition, you can target your ads so they show based on a Facebook user&#8217;s employer, <a href="https://blog.9cv9.com/job-titles-that-stand-out-a-guide-to-candidate-attraction/">job title</a>, industry, and office type:</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="877" height="627" src="https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/facebook-recruiting-work-targeting.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1120" srcset="https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/facebook-recruiting-work-targeting.jpg 877w, https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/facebook-recruiting-work-targeting-300x214.jpg 300w, https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/facebook-recruiting-work-targeting-768x549.jpg 768w, https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/facebook-recruiting-work-targeting-696x498.jpg 696w, https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/facebook-recruiting-work-targeting-587x420.jpg 587w, https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/facebook-recruiting-work-targeting-100x70.jpg 100w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 877px) 100vw, 877px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Want someone with a certain educational background? You can add education-level targeting:</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="876" height="617" src="https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/facebook-recruiting-education-targeting.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1121" srcset="https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/facebook-recruiting-education-targeting.jpg 876w, https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/facebook-recruiting-education-targeting-300x211.jpg 300w, https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/facebook-recruiting-education-targeting-768x541.jpg 768w, https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/facebook-recruiting-education-targeting-696x490.jpg 696w, https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/facebook-recruiting-education-targeting-596x420.jpg 596w, https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/facebook-recruiting-education-targeting-100x70.jpg 100w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 876px) 100vw, 876px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Interests are another important aspect of Facebook ad targeting. You can target your&nbsp;<a href="https://localiq.com/blog/recruitment-marketing-strategies/">recruitment marketing</a>&nbsp;ad to people who have certain interests.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For example, I targeted my ads to people who were interested in stuff like C++ programming, inbound marketing, and PPC, because people who are interested in these things would also be interested in finding and applying for a great new job that aligns with their passions.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="876" height="617" src="https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/facebook-recruiting-behavior-interests-targeting.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1122" srcset="https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/facebook-recruiting-behavior-interests-targeting.jpg 876w, https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/facebook-recruiting-behavior-interests-targeting-300x211.jpg 300w, https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/facebook-recruiting-behavior-interests-targeting-768x541.jpg 768w, https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/facebook-recruiting-behavior-interests-targeting-696x490.jpg 696w, https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/facebook-recruiting-behavior-interests-targeting-596x420.jpg 596w, https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/facebook-recruiting-behavior-interests-targeting-100x70.jpg 100w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 876px) 100vw, 876px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You can even use&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wordstream.com/blog/ws/2015/11/16/facebook-remarketing">remarketing</a>&nbsp;to reach people who have visited your site before and are already familiar with your brand.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After all the targeting options for the ad I created, I narrowed down my market, and it was actually quite large (almost 40,000 people reached) plus super relevant.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">My Facebook Recruiting Experiment: The Results</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">First off, check out the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wordstream.com/blog/ws/2017/09/14/facebook-relevance-score">relevance score</a>&nbsp;on this ad: a 7 out of 10.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="283" src="https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/facebook-recruiting-relevance-score-1024x283.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1123" srcset="https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/facebook-recruiting-relevance-score-1024x283.jpg 1024w, https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/facebook-recruiting-relevance-score-300x83.jpg 300w, https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/facebook-recruiting-relevance-score-768x212.jpg 768w, https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/facebook-recruiting-relevance-score-696x192.jpg 696w, https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/facebook-recruiting-relevance-score-1068x295.jpg 1068w, https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/facebook-recruiting-relevance-score.jpg 1410w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wordstream.com/blog/ws/2015/03/30/facebook-relevance-score">relevance score</a>&nbsp;shows you how well your audience responds to your ad.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Engagement on this ad was awesome:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>83 likes</li><li>14 comments</li><li>15 shares</li><li>773 clicks on the link to our jobs page</li><li>15 new likes for my Facebook page</li></ul>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="366" src="https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/facebook-recruiting-engagement-metrics-1024x366.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1124" srcset="https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/facebook-recruiting-engagement-metrics-1024x366.jpg 1024w, https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/facebook-recruiting-engagement-metrics-300x107.jpg 300w, https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/facebook-recruiting-engagement-metrics-768x275.jpg 768w, https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/facebook-recruiting-engagement-metrics-696x249.jpg 696w, https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/facebook-recruiting-engagement-metrics-1068x382.jpg 1068w, https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/facebook-recruiting-engagement-metrics-1174x420.jpg 1174w, https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/facebook-recruiting-engagement-metrics.jpg 1411w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is pretty incredible engagement for a recruitment ad!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On Facebook, engagement is the key. The higher your engagement, the higher your rewards from Facebook.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is why you need to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wordstream.com/blog/ws/2020/03/17/goal-talk-episode-6">know exactly who you want to hire</a>. Targeting your audience based on the demographics, interests, and behaviors that fit your open position will result in more relevant ads and higher engagement.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Had I simply targeted this same post to anyone with a Facebook account, the results would have been far less impressive. The engagement rate would be lower and the costs would be higher.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That&#8217;s because the higher your relevancy score, the lower your cost per engagement will be:</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="338" src="https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/facebook-recruiting-costs-1024x338.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1125" srcset="https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/facebook-recruiting-costs-1024x338.jpg 1024w, https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/facebook-recruiting-costs-300x99.jpg 300w, https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/facebook-recruiting-costs-768x253.jpg 768w, https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/facebook-recruiting-costs-696x229.jpg 696w, https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/facebook-recruiting-costs-1068x352.jpg 1068w, https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/facebook-recruiting-costs.jpg 1101w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Wow – $0.47 per engagement. So cheap!</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What&#8217;s the ROI on Facebook Recruiting?</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Justin saw my ad and responded to it (you can respond to ads by messaging the page), asking for information on how to apply. Here was how our conversation began:</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="546" height="308" src="https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/justin-larry-facebook-conversation.png" alt="" class="wp-image-1126" srcset="https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/justin-larry-facebook-conversation.png 546w, https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/justin-larry-facebook-conversation-300x169.png 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 546px) 100vw, 546px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Not long after, we ended up hiring Justin. Not only did he get the job, but he has turned into one of WordStream&#8217;s unicorns.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Just look at a couple of the amazing Core Values nominations (our version of “Employee of the Month”) Justin received:</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="541" src="https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/justin-weyant-nomination1.png" alt="" class="wp-image-1127" srcset="https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/justin-weyant-nomination1.png 600w, https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/justin-weyant-nomination1-300x271.png 300w, https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/justin-weyant-nomination1-466x420.png 466w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="720" height="549" src="https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/justin-weyant-nomination2.png" alt="" class="wp-image-1128" srcset="https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/justin-weyant-nomination2.png 720w, https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/justin-weyant-nomination2-300x229.png 300w, https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/justin-weyant-nomination2-696x531.png 696w, https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/justin-weyant-nomination2-551x420.png 551w, https://blog.9cv9.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/justin-weyant-nomination2-80x60.png 80w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In addition to winning big with Justin, the same Facebook ad attracted interest (and about 20 resumes) from several good applicants.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Facebook Ads Are Job Recruitment Gold</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When you&#8217;ve thought about using social media to hire new talent and fill open jobs, up until now you may have only thought about LinkedIn. But as you&#8217;re recruiting for new talent in the future, think outside the box.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Think Facebook. Create ads that target certain skills, interests, and demographics of your ideal candidate. Facebook ads + $200 and great targeting = awesome hires!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It was actually much cheaper in this case to have found our talented hire through Facebook rather than using a recruiter or LinkedIn ads. So next time you&#8217;re looking to fill a role in your company, give Facebook Ads a try.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">What do you think? Have you ever used&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wordstream.com/facebook-advertising">Facebook Ads</a>&nbsp;to find new employees?</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>Instead of generating zip file and transfer it from your server, why not download <a href="https://blog.9cv9.com/top-website-statistics-data-and-trends-in-2024-latest-and-updated/">data</a> and zip them in your browsers?</em></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>This is a guest posting by Mr. Ngo Viet Khanh Huy. To submit your articles for guest postings, please email to hello@9cv9.com</em></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph" id="54c2">I recently worked on a side project, which generates reports per user’s request. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph" id="54c2">For each request, our backend will generate a report, upload it to Amazon S3 storage, and return its URL to the client. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph" id="54c2">Since generating a report takes a while, the output files are stored and the server caches their URLs by request params. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph" id="54c2">If a user orders the same thing, the backend will return the URL of the existing file.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph" id="b136">A few days ago, I had a new requirement. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph" id="b136">Instead of individual files, I needed to download a zip file containing hundreds of reports. The first solution came into my mind is:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>Prepare the zip file on the server</li><li>Upload it to a storage</li><li>Give the client the URL to download it</li></ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph" id="ce09">But this solution has a few drawbacks:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>The logic to generate a zip file is quite complicated. I need to consider generating all files per request or combining between reusing existing files and generating new ones. Both approaches seem complicated. They will take time to process and require a lot of effort coding, testing, and maintenance later on.</li><li>It cannot utilize the feature I had already built. Although the Zip files are different sets of reports, it’s very likely that most of the individual reports have been generated by an earlier request. So, while the Zip file itself is not likely reusable, the single files do. With the approach above, I need to redo the whole thing all the time, it’s not really efficient.</li><li>Generating a zip file takes a long time. Since my backend is a single-thread process, this operation can block other requests for a while and may get timed out during this time.</li><li>It’s very hard to track processes on the client-side. I love to put a progress bar on the website. If everything is handled at the backend, I need to find an additional approach to report status to the frontend. And this is not easy.</li><li>I want to save costs for my infrastructure. It’s great if we can shift some computing to frontend and reduce the cost for the infrastructure. My clients won’t mind if they wait for a few more seconds, or spend some extra MB of RAM on their laptop.</li></ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph" id="9f5d">The final solution I came up with is: download all the files to the browser and zip them there. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph" id="9f5d">In this post, I will work through how I do it.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph" id="cf9a"><strong><em>Disclaimer</em></strong><em>: In this post, I’ll assume you already had basic knowledge about&nbsp;</em><a href="https://javascript.info/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Javascript</em></a><em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;</em><a href="https://web.dev/promises/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Promise</em></a><em>. If you didn’t, I would recommend you to get to know them first and come back here <img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/1f642.png" alt="🙂" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /></em></p>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading" id="8580">Download a single file</h1>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph" id="8a0a">Before applying new solutions, my system allows downloading a single report file. There are many ways to do that. The backend can respond raw file content directly via HTTP request or upload file to another storage and return file URL. I choose the 2nd approach since I want to cache all the generated files.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph" id="6c19">Once I have a file URL in hand, the work on the client is pretty simple: open this URL in a new tab. The browser will do the rest to download the file.</p>

<pre class="wp-block-preformatted"><code>const downloadViaBrowser = url =&gt; {
 window.open(url, ‘_blank’);
}</code></pre>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading" id="bc45">Download multiple files and store in memory</h1>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph" id="c5ae">When it comes to download and zip multiple files, we cannot use the simple method above anymore.</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>If a JS script tries to open many links at once, browsers will wonder if it’s a threat and warn users to block these actions. While the user can confirm to continue, it’s not a good experience</li><li>You cannot control the downloaded file. The browser manages file content and location</li></ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph" id="26fa">Another way to handle this is by using&nbsp;<code>fetch</code>&nbsp;to download files and store data as&nbsp;<a href="https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/API/Blob" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Blob</a>&nbsp;in memory. We can then write it to file or combine those blob data into a zip file.</p>

<pre class="wp-block-preformatted">const download = url =&gt; {<br>  return fetch(url).then(resp =&gt; resp.blob());<br>};</pre>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph" id="aaee">This function returns a promise to be resolved as a blob. We can combine with a&nbsp;<code>Promise.all()</code>&nbsp;to download multiple files.&nbsp;<code>Promise.all()</code>&nbsp;will do all the promises at once, and resolve if all of the child promises are resolved or one of them gets an error.</p>

<pre class="wp-block-preformatted">const downloadMany = urls =&gt; {<br> return Promise.all(urls.map(url =&gt; download(url))<br>}</pre>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading" id="d1f0">Download by groups of X files</h1>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph" id="98db">But what happens if we need to download a huge amount of files at once? Let’s say 1000 files? Using&nbsp;<code>Promise.all()</code>&nbsp;may not be a good idea anymore. Your code will send a thousand requests at once. There are many problems with that approach:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>The number of concurrent connections supported by OS and browser is limited. Therefore, the browser can only process a few requests at once. The other requests are put in queue, and timeout count. The consequence is, most of your requests will time out before they even get sent.</li><li>Sending a huge number of requests at a time can also overload your backend</li></ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph" id="cd41">The solution I thought about is to divide the files into multiple groups. Let’s say, I have 1000 files to download. Instead of starting to download them all at once by&nbsp;<code>Promise.all()</code>, I will download 5 files each time. After finishing those 5, I will start another pack. In total, I&#8217;ll download 250 packs.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph" id="f4f2">To implement this, we can do a custom logic. Or a simpler way I could suggest is to utilize third-party library&nbsp;<a href="http://bluebirdjs.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bluebirdjs</a>. The library implemented many helpful promise functions. For this use case, I will use&nbsp;<a href="http://bluebirdjs.com/docs/api/promise.map.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Promise.map()</a>. Notice that&nbsp;<code>Promise</code>&nbsp;here now is the custom Promise provided by the library, not the built-in Promise.</p>

<pre class="wp-block-preformatted">import Promise from 'bluebird';const downloadByGroup = (urls, files_per_group=5) =&gt; {<br> return Promise.map(<br> urls, <br> async url =&gt; {<br> return await download(url);<br> },<br> {concurrency: files_per_group}<br> );<br>}</pre>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph" id="c0b2">With the implementation above, the function will receive an array of URLs and start to download all URLs, with maximum&nbsp;<code>files_per_group</code>&nbsp;each time. The function returns a Promise, which will resolve when all URLs were downloaded and reject if any of them fail.</p>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading" id="3ca2">Create zip file</h1>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph" id="255f">Now I have everything downloaded into memory. As I mentioned above, the downloaded content is stored as Blob. The next step is to create a zip file using those Blob data.</p>

<pre class="wp-block-preformatted">import JsZip from 'jszip';<br>import FileSaver from 'file-saver';const exportZip = blobs =&gt; {<br>  const zip = JsZip();<br>  blobs.forEach((blob, i) =&gt; {<br>    zip.file(`file-${i}.csv`, blob);<br>  });<br>  zip.generateAsync({type: 'blob'}).then(zipFile =&gt; {<br>    const currentDate = new Date().getTime();<br>    const fileName = `combined-${currentDate}.zip`;<br>    return FileSaver.saveAs(zipFile, fileName);<br>  });<br>}</pre>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading" id="609a">Final code</h1>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph" id="ae08">Let’s finalize all the code I’ve done for this here.</p>

<pre class="wp-block-preformatted">import Promise from 'bluebird';<br>import JsZip from 'jszip';<br>import FileSaver from 'file-saver';const download = url =&gt; {<br>  return fetch(url).then(resp =&gt; resp.blob());<br>};const downloadByGroup = (urls, files_per_group=5) =&gt; {<br>  return Promise.map(<br>    urls, <br>    async url =&gt; {<br>      return await download(url);<br>    },<br>    {concurrency: files_per_group}<br>  );<br>}const exportZip = blobs =&gt; {<br>  const zip = JsZip();<br>  blobs.forEach((blob, i) =&gt; {<br>    zip.file(`file-${i}.csv`, blob);<br>  });<br>  zip.generateAsync({type: 'blob'}).then(zipFile =&gt; {<br>    const currentDate = new Date().getTime();<br>    const fileName = `combined-${currentDate}.zip`;<br>    return FileSaver.saveAs(zipFile, fileName);<br>  });<br>}const downloadAndZip = urls =&gt; {<br>  return downloadByGroup(urls, 5).then(exportZip);<br>}</pre>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading" id="962f">Conclusion</h1>

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>Utilize client’s power is sometimes very useful to reduce workload and complexity for backend</li><li>Don’t send a huge amount of requests at a time. You can run into trouble at both the frontend and backend side. Instead, divide the works into small chunks.</li><li>Introduce some third party libraries <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="http://bluebirdjs.com/" target="_blank">bluebird</a>, <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.npmjs.com/package/jszip" target="_blank">jszip</a>, and <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://github.com/eligrey/FileSaver.js" target="_blank">file-saver</a>. They worked well for me and could also be helpful for you <img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/1f642.png" alt="🙂" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /></li></ul>
